Day 20: August 21, 2015: Reasons NOT to Vote CON #'s 476 to 500

477. Harper's CON Candidate in the 2015 Election for Nanaimo-Ladysmith, Mark MacDonald, has refused to enter any local election debates. His response read, "At this time we will decline all invitations of debates, positions and questionnaires during the election campaign. Mark MacDonald, candidate, and the campaign team are focused on the issues of the Campaign, which will be highlighted in our printed materials. When Mark becomes an elected official you are more than welcome to contact his office, to discuss a variety of issues. Please know your issue is not being singled out, rather no response will be given any group, party or individual on any of the issues raised by them."

At the UN, when Harper speaks, no one listens.

491. Harper has killed true democracy in Canada. According to a well-written letter to the Toronto Star, Harper "has embraced an ideology dedicated to a gradual, but carefully managed redefinition of Canada’s democratic values and freedoms. Characterized by a resolute, personal control over messaging, coupled with a singular management of policy and operational decisions, Harper’s autocratic style has over time incorporated a range of positions such as: wilful suppression or “re-interpretation” of information; attacks on the media and a devotion to a culture of fear, intimidation and secrecy; repudiation of common ground participation or reasoned compromise with its opponents; and control, misrepresentation, narrowing and elimination of scientific, social and financial researched facts and statistical data through targeted budgetary cutbacks, access limitations, security-inspired censorship and reductions in regulatory oversight. A disturbing and unsettling habit of the Harper government is one of allowing a broad range of right-leaning ideological positions to triumph over historical evidence, empirical data and common sense in many of its strategic social, political, and economic plans. When ideology is made into an operational weapon, or set into a global context, it begins by exploiting the vulnerabilities of those least likely to be able to defend themselves, in addition to overtly attacking those who oppose its doctrines and philosophies."

495. Harper does NOT take women seriously. Canada ranks an embarrassing 20th amongst 133 countries when it comes to the gender gap, behind countries such as Nicaragua, Latvia, Cuba and Lesotho. Violence annually drives 100,000 women and children from their homes into shelters, costing Canadian society billions of dollars. The Department of Justice estimates that spousal abuse costs $7.4 billion annually. Canadian women, on average, earn 81 cents for every dollar a man earns. Canada is in a shocking 49th place ranking among 133 countries on health and survival. Harper has not addressed the tragic gaps in aboriginal health outcomes, which continue unabated. Canada’s dismal 42nd place ranking in democratic representation, with men outnumbering women in Parliament by a ratio of three to one, is in stark contrast to Rwanda, where women held 45 of the 80 seats in Parliament.

Day 19: August 20, 2015: Reasons NOT to Vote CON #'s 451 to 475

451. Harper is undermining public health care according to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, (CMAJ). In 2011, the Conservatives unilaterally announced they would scale back federal health transfers to provinces from an annual increase of 6% to a rate tied with GDP, (or a minimum of 3%). the 2014 federal budget made the equalization portion of the Health Care Transfer contingent on a per capita formula -- as opposed to needs-based. This move is expected to reduce transfers to have-not provinces by $16.5 billion over five years. The Canadian Medical Association reports that four out of five Canadians said they are not confident they will have access to health services when they need it and 61% doubt Canada's hospitals and long-term care facilities will be able to meet the demands of an aging population. CMAJ's Deputy Editor, Dr. Matthew Stanbrook, stated, "For much of the last decade, Canadian federal health policy has been conspicuous by its absence. In recent years, the [Harper] government has neglected [its health care] responsibilities, even when courts have ordered them to do otherwise. During that time, the [Harper] government has walked away from collaborating with the provinces through the Council of the Federation and declined to renew the First Ministers’ Accord on Health Care; dithered on public health measures of glaringly obvious benefit, such as tobacco control and asbestos elimination; ignored and disbanded expert advisory panels on health issues; weakened the authority of the public health agency; muzzled scientists; eliminated the long form census, the best source of information on regional disparities relevant to health; and eroded research support, while increasingly tying what remains to business interests rather than health benefits. By all appearances, the [Harper] government seems to be trying to get itself out of the health care business. It cannot. Many essential aspects of health care are a federal responsibility, and our biggest, most complex problems in the health care system cannot be solved without federal leadership. Without such leadership, Canadians will continue to suffer. The CMAJ is calling on "all Canadians to make sure that health care is a key issue in the upcoming federal election."

452. 55,000 unionized Canadian voters will be voting AGAINST Harper and the CONs on October 19, 2015. The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada is abandoning its tradition of neutrality in elections to actively campaign against Harper. The union, which represents some 55,000 professionals in the public service, has traditionally chosen to stay at arm’s length from elections. Union President, Debi Daviau, stated, “Extraordinary times call for extraordinary actions. This [Harper] government has forced non-partisan organizations such as ours to make a very difficult choice: to remain silent or to speak out. We have chosen to speak out.” Daviau cited several controversial bills as proof that the government has targeted “the very existence of unions and collective bargaining.” A survey commissioned by the union last year found HUNDREDS of scientists who claimed they had been asked to EXCLUDE OR ALTER INFORMATION in government documents for non-scientific reasons. And thousands more said they’d been PREVENTED from talking freely about their work with the media or the public. “Canadians deserve to know the damage this government is inflicting, unnecessarily and often underhandedly, to their services, their programs and even to their democracy,” Daviau said.

455. Harper IGNORED his own staff lawyer's advice on Senate residency qualifications, as revealed by that lawyer's testimony, under oath, at Duffy's trial on August 20, 2015. Harper's former legal adviser, Benjamin Perrin, (currently a law professor at the University of British Columbia), worked as a legal affairs and policy adviser to Harper from 2012-13. On the stand he explained that he was "taken aback" by Harper's position that an individual only needed to own $4,000 of property in a province to be constitutionally qualified to represent the region. Perrin testified that he communicated his concerns diplomatically to the PMO but the PMO stood firm on its definition. At the time, there had been questions about whether some senators, including Duffy, met the constitutional residency requirements. The Constitution clearly states that a senator "shall be resident in the province for which he is appointed" and must own property worth at least $4,000 in that province.

462. Harper's Cabinet Ministers Peter MacKay and Tony Clement should have RESIGNED AS MPs due to their acquisition bungling, according to then-CON MP Brent Rathgeber. That was why Rathgeber became a former CON. While still a CON MP Rathgeber was so upset with the CON’s handling of the F-35 purchase, he wrote a blog entry critiquing it. That was a huge problem in Harper's word since Rathgeber was a CON MP himself and backbenchers are supposed to shut up and say nothing without Harper's prior approval. Soon after, the phone rang, with Harper’s office on the line demanding the blog post be removed. When the caller was told no the caller said, “You don’t understand; I am calling from the PMO.” After being tossed from the CON caucus by harper, Rathgeber went more public with his sentiments describing the tightly controlled CON caucus, where backbenchers are given little say and punished for stepping out of line with a relocated office, a less desirable committee and the cancelling of travel junkets.

470. Harper's control of scientists could easily result in the deaths of Canadians. Harper orders marine scientists NOT to issue WARNINGS about DEADLY red tides to Canadians UNTIL his release approvals are granted.  Calvin Sandborn, a lawyer with the Environmental Law Centre at the University of Victoria stated, "[We] just hope that nobody dies while we're waiting for political approval from a minister's office. It's crazy. We have fisheries scientists saying that they're restricted from issuing red tide warnings without getting political approval from Ottawa. So, you have a government scientist put in a quandary: do we issue a red tide warning, because red tides can kill people, do I do that right now or do I send it off to Ottawa and follow all the protocols and just hope that nobody dies while we're waiting for political approval from a minister's office?" These days, Canadian scientists are sent to international conferences with "government minders," Sandborn added.

474. Harper's personal definition of crime, insisting that, "Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women is NOT a “Sociological Phenomenon” but simply a series of individual crimes" was WRONG and RACIST, according to Jakeet Singh, Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics & Government at Illinois State University. Singh explained, "Harper really seems to have it out for sociology. In 2013, in response to an alleged plot against a VIA train, Harper remarked that we should not “commit sociology,” but pursue an anti-crime approach. And last week, in response to the death of Tina Fontaine, Harper argued that an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women is not needed, because this is not a “ sociological phenomenon ” but simply a series of individual crimes. Of course, not only is all crime a sociological phenomenon , but also without a broader sociological analysis we can’t begin to understand why the rates of missing and murdered indigenous women are tragically high compared to non-indigenous women. Furthermore, it’s clear that if rates of violence against non-indigenous women climbed as high as those of indigenous women, this government (even with its woeful record on women’s issues) would be more likely to announce not only a public inquiry but a full-scale national strategy. This double-standard in how we value human lives is what sociologists call “racism.”

Day 18: August 19, 2015: Reasons NOT to Vote CON #'s 426 to 450

435. Harper's Foreign Worker Programme is a magnet for Human Rights abuses! The United Nations has reported Harper's Human Rights abuses and this was a PERFECT example. Before he died, this foreign worker in Quebec, had CLAIMED Human Rights abuses on camera! Mexican worker Ivan Guerrero drowned on the farm where he worked. Strangely, his death was NOT REPORTED to police for THREE DAYS! Following his death, a local group dedicated to helping migrant workers shared a shocking video which they had recorded with Guerrero before he died. On a stark background, Guerrero speaks directly into the camera, addressing the slave-like hardships he endured at work."Es como si fuera yo ... un perro," he said. Translated: “It’s like I'm the dog, and she's my owner,” he describes his taskmaster.  He told of long hours, UNPAID overtime and limited freedom. Guerrero, looked straight into the camera and added, “We are human beings, and I would like to be treated with more dignity.” Guerrero had been coming to Canada for four years, picking vegetables and sending his earnings to his wife and two kids back in Mexico. On the first day of his fifth summer in Canada, he died while trying to fix a leak near his living quarters. It took three days for someone to contact authorities. Why hasn't Harper ensured that all foreigners working in Canada under his Foreign Worker Programme are not treated like the Chinese brought in to work like slaves to build our transcontinental railroad? Why is Harper in another century when it comes to Human Rights of workers? The United Nations has reported Harper's Human Rights abuses. It is because Harper has zero shame! May Ivan Guerrero rest in peace, something he did not find working for peanuts in Harper's Canada. Perhaps, as a redeeming gesture, if that is possible, a new Prime Minister would consider a collection for Ivan's widow and two children, plus perhaps something done as a memorial in Mexico for them. It is the least a once-proud nation could do for its own recovery and dignity; once Harper is gone.

One wonders: if Harper fires Novak, will Novak announce Harper knew?

449. Harper is DELUDED: he has been abusing First Nations at EVERY opportunity, from genocide to treaty-breaking, then HAD THE NERVE to issue a Press Release stating he "Continued to Strengthen" Ottawa's relationship with First Nations!

Day 17: August 18, 2015: Reasons NOT to Vote CON #'s 401 to 425

404. Harper, in a shameful bid to get rid of five Arab refugees, lost yet ANOTHER court case when  Harper's Immigration and Refugee Board tried to deport the seven member Gholami family of Nova Scotia, (Mom, Dad & five kids), to Iran. GET THIS: Iran is a country this family had NEVER BEEN TO! Abbas Gholami, his wife Fatemeh Naserian Mochadam, and their five children were all born in Kuwait, but due to the father’s family ties, they are technically citizens of Iran. Justice James O’Reilly of the Federal Court of Canada judge ruled that Harper's Immigration and Refugee Board didn't properly consider the issue. The family arrived in Nova Scotia a couple of years ago. They say they left Kuwait after years of threatening phone calls from Mochadam’s cousins. Court documents say her family, which are Arab, were unhappy she had married a husband of Persian ancestry. They felt it shameful and threatened to kill the woman. None of the family, however, has ever lived there, or even visited. "Send us your sick, your tired and your hungry." Whoops! That's the USA you're looking for. This is Canada. GET OUT!

414. Harper has screwed up to an estimated 150,000 Canadian Old Age Pensioners out of part of their pensions dating back as far as SEVEN YEARS! CON MP Alice Wong, Minister of State for Seniors, has DECLINED TO COMMENT! [Former CON MP] Brent Rathgeber, running in Election 2015 as an Independent in St. Albert-Edmonton, Alberta said its "an embarrassment and a political liability. Had Parliament been sitting, no doubt there would have been tough questions asked of the minister responsible. Sadly, the details are going to have to wait until after the election. I think that’s unfortunate because there will be individual Canadians caught up in the interim who will have a difficult time making their ends meet.” Noel Somerville, Chairman, Public Interest Alberta Seniors Task Force stated, “I am sure there are a lot of seniors in dire financial straits who would really require that money, and I think the government should come clean about what happened and what they should do about it,” Ministry of State for Seniors spokeswoman Julia Sullivan said she was unable to provide any information! Meanwhile, despite screwing Canadians out of tens of thousands of dollars, Stephen "Mister Tough on Crime" Harper is paying his appointed Senator Mike Duffy his FULL senators salary while he is on trial! Where is the justice in screwing 150,000 pensioners and paying Duffy for his alleged crime?

417. Harper's TOP PEOPLE knew about the $90,000 Duffy Cheque, according to RCMP Documents. They included Sen. Marjory LeBreton, Government Leader in the Senate, Sen. David Tkachuk, Chair of the Senate Standing Committee, Sen. Carolyn Stewart Olsen, Member of the Senate Standing Committee, Andrew MacDougall, Director of Communications, Prime Minister’s Office, Benjamin Perrin, Legal Counsel to the Prime Minister, Ray Novak, Harper’s Deputy Chief of Staff, Carl Vallee, Press Secretary, Prime Minister’s Office, Arthur Hamilton, Legal Counsel, Conservative Party of Canada, and Chris Woodcock, Director of Issues Management, Prime Minister’s Office. Harper CONTROLS EVERYTHING. So if THEY all knew, how come "Harper didn't"? Here's a SIMPLE SOLUTION: if Harper is SO SURE he didn't, why doesn't he just submit to a LIE DETECTOR test to shut up his critics and most Canadians?

Day 16: August 17, 2015: Reasons NOT to Vote CON #'s 376 to 400

376. The Harper Regime has given permission to Shell Oil to drill off Nova Scotia's coast for oil. GET THIS: to save stocking emergency equipment, Shell does NOT have to cap an oil blowout for TWENTY-ONE DAYS, (yes, three weeks)! Harper has allowed Shell the possibility to freely spill oil into the ocean for almost a month; wreaking environmental havoc on Nova Scotia's amazing marine life, major fishing grounds, coastal communities and the Sable Island National Park Reserve, the world's largest breeding colony of grey seals. And Harper's deal is so Shell can save a few bucks by not having to keep safety equipment nearby! In comparison, the U.S. requires oil companies to cap blowouts within 24 hours. Just where is the nearest capping equipment? NORWAY!!! An ocean and 5,000 kilometres away! Shell wants to drill up to seven exploratory wells, which are especially risky and prone to large spills, off the coast of Nova Scotia in the next four years. If a blowout did happen, it would be catastrophic for Nova Scotia's major fishing grounds. Haddock, lobster and crab stocks would be at risk, as would whales, dolphins, sharks, sea turtles and hundreds of species of migratory birds. IT GETS WORSE: some of the backup safety equipment is located in SOUTH AFRICA, a staggering 12,000 kilometres away.

Possibly coming to Nova Scotia, thanks to the Harper Regime: this is the April, 2010 explosion at British Petroleum’s Deepwater Horizon offshore rig in the Gulf of Mexico which has done irreparable harm to the environment, tourism and jobs. It killed 11 workers.

377. The Union of Canadian Correctional Officers, which represents Canada’s prison guards, is urging its 7,500 members NOT to vote for Harper and the CONs in Election 2015. Jason Godin, National Vice President at the Union of Canadian Correctional Officers stated, “They’ve done more damage in three years than any government has done in our entire history. We’re reaching crisis proportions in terms of double-bunking, and [the government] just completely ignores all the research. When they get tough on crime, they get tough on correctional officers. At the same time they’re making our working conditions get more dangerous, they’re gutting the Canada Labour Code, which is the most important piece of protection that we have. In ten years time, Canadians are gonna go, ‘Oh my God what just happened?’ Because all of those people they’re putting in jail, guess what? 80 per cent of them are going to get out.” Although the union’s constitution forbids the guards from endorsing political parties, Godin said he will be encouraging his members to vote against Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s Conservatives in 2015.

378. Harper's Employment Minister, CON MP Jason Kenney offended tens of thousands of unemployed Canadians on August 1, 2104 when he Twittered, "Do Labour Shortages Exist in Canada?" Why would Canada’s Employment Minister openly and offhandedly offend SO MANY Canadians on that very large and well read social network system? Jason Kenny's MAIN RESPONSIBILITY as Canada's Employment Minister IS jobs and he treated these hurting Canadians coast to coast to coast with ZERO ETHICS and COMPLETE IRRESPONSIBLY. What a mess. And it got worse! Tens of thousands of Canada’s unemployed are in serious financial difficulty and are being refused Employment Insurance! Harper robbed the Employment Insurance Fund in a futile attempt to balance his budget; instead of paying Canada's Unemployed what was rightfully theirs!

381. Harper DESTROYED 48-year-old Terry Potvin's life by handing his "Criminal Record" over to the USA. Decades ago, Potvin had been arrested with a small amount of “crappy hash oil” when he and his pals were searched outside a pool hall. He acknowledges that at 19-years-old he was “being young and dumb,” BUT he got a conditional discharge, two years probation, and NO criminal record! The USA refused him entry which has cost him his career. The now 48-year-old Wasaga Beach auto parts executive and father of two is so squeaky clean that he had no idea why he was pulled over for secondary screening by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. All he knew was that being grilled for six hours about his past was going to make him late for his business trip to Nashville as part of the new job he’d started just two weeks before as lead quality engineer. He had to call his new boss and tell him that he wasn’t being allowed into the U.S. because of a three-decade old pot charge. Potvin understood when his employer had to let him go because of his travel problems. Another position with an auto parts company also fell through when he told them he couldn’t go into the States.

382. Harper the Hypocrite hosted the "Saving Every Woman, Every Child" global summit on maternal, newborn and child health in Toronto from May 28 to 30, 2014.  Very nice. At the Summit, Harper announced Canada's commitment of $3.5 billion to improve the health of mothers and children for the period of 2015–2020 and to support global efforts to end the preventable deaths of mothers, newborn and children younger than age five. Also very, very nice! On September 25, 2014, during his address at the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Prime Minister Harper also announced that Canada, along with its partners, had founded the Global Financing Facility for Every Woman Every Child, in order to provide the critical financial infrastructure to mobilize the capital to improve health services for women and children, and would contribute $200 million in its support from its $3.5 billion five year commitment.  Even nicer Harper! BUT BUT BUT! Here's the Harper HYPOCRISY: during his speech, when donating billions of dollars to this cause,  Harper stated, "There is a moral imperative to saving the lives of vulnerable women and children in some of the poorest countries around the world when it is in our power to do so." SAY WHAT HARPER! Why do you commit BILLIONS of dollars and see the moral imperative for women and children around the world but you do NOT see the moral imperative, or commit a dime, for an Inquiry for Missing & Murdered Women and Children in your own country!

383. Harper racially SLURRED every Muslim in the world in a CBC interview with Peter Mansbridge, referring to their religion as "Islamicism" and warning they are terrorists. The Islamic Supreme Council of Canada immediately urged Muslims to speak out against Harper's remarks about their religion. The council said Harper's words damaged efforts to bridge cultural gaps and fight extremist activities in Canada. It wanted Imams in its affiliated mosques to condemn the comments prayer gatherings. The council also urged Canadians to contact the Harper's office to demand an apology for "insulting the faith of 1,600,000,000 Muslims worldwide. "How can Mr. Harper associate Islam with radicalism and fanaticism?" the group asked in a statement."We are working hard to bring people of all faiths together to fight extremism and radicalism but Mr. Harper's comments about Islam have damaged those efforts."

384. Harper's inexperience, government waste, and ineptness was reflected perfectly in his CON-highly-touted, but Titanic-like, disastrous maternity leave Employment Insurance Preggie Programme for self-employed business people. This stupidity was a major and integral part of Harper's vote-getting strategy of the 2008 CON election platform, which many voters bought into; hook, line and sinker. (Seriously: if Harper says a CON scheme will work, some people actually believe him!)  Well, read on. Harper SHOULD have consulted experts, including self-employed business people FIRST. In one minute he'd have learned he would WASTE tens of millions of dollars. (Then again, he does not consult with scientists on scientific matters ...) Harper would have learned that hard-working, self-employed Canadians take as LITTLE TIME OFF as possible. It is the nature of their SUCCESS. But Harper, who shuts down Parliament at will when he is a failure, (repeatedly sending 308 highly-paid MPs home), wouldn't comprehend the nature of self-employment: to keep it successful you MUST keep working. This proves that his ineptness is another factor in how Harper destroyed Canada's once-Liberal-rich Treasury; by proroguing Parliament at will. From documents obtained through the Access to Information Act, Harper's idiotic and highly touted Preggie Programme, (administered by Harper's ring-kisser, then Employment Minister, CON MP Pierre "Skippy" Poilievre, who has never worked in business), INSERT: [but has nice hair though], which promised to be a "self-paying" CON scheme, actually COST hard-working Canadian Taxpayers millions of dollars! Harper and Skippy told Canadians an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 pregnant Canadians would sign up. It has been learned 2,316 claims were filed, worth $21,100,000 in benefits. The CON participation projections were out by 99.5 PER CENT! How much did this "self-paying" CON scheme cost to administer? $39,600,000! Harper's lack of business knowledge cost hard-working Canadians $18,500,000! And RIGHT now, during the summer and fall of 2015, Harper is going coast to coast to coast touting new, UNTRIED programmes. Again! After this schmozzle, which helped to blow away a Treasury filled by the Liberals with tens of billions of dollars, Harper does not have an ounce of credibility left!

387. Harper's HYPOCRISY could BACKFIRE because of his CON Caucus CON Johns: Harper passed Bill C-36, his new, oppressive Prostitution Law which targets "Johns" or men who use Sexual Workers. Harper wants to eliminate the world's oldest profession from Canadian soil. In fact, Sexual Workers claim Harper has done nothing but make their profession highly more dangerous. Under oath, in a Senate Committee Hearing, (from which she was tossed by CON Chairman of the committee, Senator Bob Runciman), retired dominatrix Terri-Jean Bedford testified that many of Harper's CON MPs are in fact CON Johns, regularly using sexual workers in Ottawa when they are sitting, away from their wives. (Or would that be lying?) Under oath, Ms. Bedford claimed she has all the CON Johns' names, and threatened to release them to the public. Is this CON JOHN threat why so many "rats have jumped ship"? Many political junkie inquiring minds want to know.

388. Harper's Vetting skills are ridiculous. He has appointed:
Patrick Brazeau - criminally charged, assault, drug possession
Pamela Wallin – under RCMP investigation
Michael Sona - criminally convicted, election fraud
Arthur Porter- charges pending, fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, since deceased.
Vic Toews- convicted for violating Manitoba Election Law, affair with nanny.
Bev Oda- resigned after lavish expenses
Mike Duffy - criminally charged, fraud
Nigel Wright - resigned after Duffy payoff
John Duncan - resigned after writing to Tax Court, ignored State of Emergency- Attawapiskat
Bruce Carson - already convicted of fraud, charged again in 2012 for influence peddling
Julian Fantino- demoted from cabinet post for incompetence.
Irving Gerstein- charged for violating Elections Act, charges dropped when Tories paid $52,000 fine Pierre-Hugues Boisvenu – Under investigation, senate expenses
Nathan Jacobson – criminally charged, fraud, racketeering
Peter Penashue - resigned because of illegal campaign contributions.
Dean Del Mastro- criminally convicted for election fraud.
Saulie Zajdel – MP candidate/on James Moore's staff, convicted of corruption and breach of trust.
Don Meredith – had affair with a minor.

390. Harper HYPOCRISY: went all goo-goo over history when Franklin's ship was located, this ... after DESTROYING libraries, archives and historical documents! Where's the sense in that?
